Worked example: a PNG photo and a transparent graphic

In this test a 512 x 512 PNG portrait of 415 KB became a 72 KB JPG. A 600 x 400 PNG graphic with a transparent background went the other way, from 2.8 KB to 11 KB, because simple graphics are already tiny as PNG. Its transparent background was filled with white, and the list said so.

When to convert PNG to JPG, and when not to

Convert photos saved as PNG, for example screenshots of photos or images exported from editing apps, when you need a smaller file or a site only accepts JPG. Keep screenshots of text, logos and diagrams as PNG: JPG blurs sharp edges slightly and, as the example shows, may not even be smaller.

Choosing the JPG quality

The default of 92% keeps photos looking the same as the PNG at a fraction of the size. 80% makes a noticeably smaller file and is still fine for viewing on screen. Below about 70%, blocks and smudges start to appear around edges and in smooth areas such as sky. If you need a file under a certain size, use Compress image, which finds the quality for you.

You can convert up to 50 images at once. Each keeps its name with a .jpg ending, and Download all saves them in one ZIP.

Good to know

Why your images stay on your device

RedactNinja Image runs in your web browser. When you choose an image, it is read and processed on your own computer, tablet or phone. It is not uploaded to a server, so there is nothing for us to store, look at or delete afterwards. The background remover and face finder use small AI models that your browser downloads from this site the first time you need them; the models come to your image, not the other way round.

You can check this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, select the Network tab and use a tool. Your image does not appear in the requests. The tools load no advertising or analytics code. How to check that nothing is uploaded.

Free, with no sign-up and no watermark

Every tool is free to use without an account. Nothing is added to your images, and there are no daily limits. Very large images depend on your device's memory, so older phones may be slower.
